Family FAQ

You Asked:

I just got a new web-enabled phone. To set up my email, I need to know: What is the difference between POP3 and IMAP account setups?

The Online Family Answers:

If you want to leave emails on your email server -- so they can also be downloaded to your laptop or home computer, for example -- then you likely want to choose the newer protocol Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP). IMAP will leave email messages on your server until you delete them. With POP3, on the other hand, you have to explicitly set your email program to leave messages on the server. Otherwise, with POP3, emails could be downloaded just to your phone and then deleted off the server -- meaning they won’t also download to your computer.
